Top Tips for Using the Emovis Tag in a Camper Van
Travelling through France in a camper van is one of the most freeing ways to explore the country, especially when equipped with an Emovis Tag. Whether you’re heading to the coast, the mountains, or just meandering through the countryside, these tips will help you make the most of your road trip.
1. Understand the Class System
In France, some dedicated Class 1 Liber-t lanes have a height restriction of 2 metres and are typically located on the left side of the toll plaza. However, if your vehicle and caravan have an overall height of less than 3 metres and the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of the towing vehicle does not exceed 3.5 tonnes, you can use any non-height-restricted lane that has the Liber-t symbol illuminated or the 'All Payment Methods' lane.
In Spain and Portugal, you can use the VIA-T lane with a car and caravan combination. To determine the toll class you will be charged based on vehicle size in Portugal, you can check the details here.
2. Map Out Your Route
Planning your route in advance will help you make the most of your trip. France has an extensive motorway network, and many camper-friendly camping areas are located just off major roads. Emovis Tag allows you to pass through toll gates without stopping, ensuring a smooth journey from start to finish, especially when navigating unfamiliar roads.
3. Parking and Rest Areas
France is well-equipped with rest areas designed for camper vans. Many of these areas offer services like electricity, water, and waste disposal.
4. Avoid Busy Toll Stations
When driving a camper van, manoeuvring through busy toll stations can be tricky, especially during peak times. With an Emovis Tag, you can use the dedicated Télépéage lanes, designed to let you breeze past long queues, making the drive much more relaxed and enjoyable.
5. Check the Height of Your Van
France - Liber-t Tag
If your vehicle is no more than 3 metres in height and has a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) of less than 3.5 tonnes, you can use any non-height-restricted lane displaying the Liber-t symbol or the 'All Payment Methods' lane. Vehicles within this specification fall into the Class 2 fee structure. For larger vehicles, please contact our partner company, Eurotoll.
Spain and Portugal - VIA-T Tag
Provided your motorhome weighs less than 6 tonnes, you can use the VIA-T lane.
Note: If your motorhome features a "Luton" or overhanging sleeping compartment, ensure that the tag has a clear "line of sight" to the reader (i.e., it can see the reader mounted on the pole). If you install the tag at the top of the windscreen behind the rearview mirror, it may not properly communicate with the reader. In such cases, position the tag at the bottom of the windscreen for optimal performance.
Using an Emovis Tag in your camper van is the perfect way to explore France without the hassle of tolls. With time-saving technology, your trip will be as smooth as possible, giving you more freedom to enjoy the open road.
